The morning sun spills like liquid gold over the vibrant mural adorning a shophouse facade along East Coast Road. I pause mid-step to take a photo, captivated by the neighborhood’s infectious energy that seems to pulse with every splash of colour. Here, history and modernity dance together, creating a living tapestry that invites curious souls to explore deeper.

I recently got my hands on the standout camera phone, the HONOR Magic7 Pro. Naturally, I was eager to test its camera. So, I planned a staycation at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong.
Mindful Escape in Katong
As a Peranakan, Katongโs heritage has always held a special place in my heart It felt like the perfect setting for a weekend escapeโwith my smartphone in hand.
From the moment I stepped into its lobby, with its thoughtful Peranakan-inspired design and a welcoming aroma that felt distinctly local, I knew I had found the ideal base for a mindful escape.

With my new HONOR Magic7 Pro, I had the perfect companion to capture Katong’s soul. I love that the smartphone’s AI-powered camera adapts easily to changing light, allowing me to capture vibrant colors and fine textures with minimal effort.
I didnโt have to think too much as the phone is intuitive. Point. Shoot. Done. I can skip any technical settings, and instead capture my surroundings. All the photos in this blog were taken with the HONOR Magic7 Pro.

The blend of modern comfort with authentic cultural touches at the hotel was truly impressive, making it feel less like a generic hotel and more like an extension of Katong itself. It was the perfect sanctuary to retreat to after a day of exploration, offering both tranquility and a deep connection to the area’s charm.
This is the beauty of a staycation in Katong. It’s not just about escapeโit’s about re-engagement. With yourself. With your surroundings it resides in.
Stylish Home Away from Home
Hotel Indigo’s lobby lounge had a warm, lived-in charm. It felt like a stylish Nonya living room, a place where tradition and comfort came together, telling you without words: you belong here.

Shelves displayed porcelain teacups and nostalgic trinkets, creating a cosy, eclectic vibe. I wouldโve loved to stay longer with a book and a drink from Baba Chewsโif not for the call of the neighbourhood outside.

The Room: A Mindful Retreat
At 30 square metres, the rooms at Hotel Indigo Katong feel spacious for a boutique hotel with 131 guest rooms. Where you’d expect a traditional work desk, thereโs a carom table insteadโa whimsical touch that gently suggests: take a break, put the laptop away, and just be.

When you enter the room, you will notice the wall mural by local illustrator and urban sketcher Don Low. His hand-drawn scenes of a neighbourhood coffee shop makes it seem like you are stepping into a sketchbook of Katong life.
Itโs these little artistic flourishes that convey a deeper portrayal that neighborhood life is significant.

My room is a love letter to old-world Katong, reimagined with modern polish. One of the more intriguing aspects of the room is its long and narrow layoutโa subtle but intentional design echo of Katongโs architectural heritage. The room flows in a linear sequence, designed to reflect the layout of traditional Peranakan shophouses.
Traditional Shophouse Design
Historically, these homes were built narrow and deep, a clever response to colonial-era tax laws that charged property owners based on the width of their buildingโs street frontage. To minimise their taxes while maximising space, residents built inward, resulting in that distinctive elongated floor plan.
Starting from the entryway, we first come to the washroom, then an open living and sleeping area and finally the shower area.
Itโs a design that presents a quiet architectural storytelling moment that many guests might feel without fully realising. For me, it added another layer of connection to Katong.

Attention to detail
Even the minibar carried a touch of local character. Housed in a Peranakan-style cabinet, it featured an in-room selection of TWG tea and Bacha Coffee. The coffee cups, adorned with a vintage rooster motif reminiscent of old-school Singaporean coffee shops, added a charming nod to everyday heritage.
And of course, there were the colourful Peranakan-style plates and tableware on display, each one a little canvas of intricate patterns and vibrant hues.
My favourite part of the room? The Singer sewing machine found beneath the bathroom sink. It was such an unexpected and charming detailโone that instantly stirred a sense of nostalgia.
But beyond the aesthetic, what stood out most was the energy of the roomโit didnโt demand anything from me. It simply held space. Space to breathe. To unwind. To observe. It encouraged a slower pace and a deeper kind of presence.
A staycation that extends into the neighbourhood
What sets Hotel Indigo apart from many boutique stays is its deep commitment to neighbourhood storytelling. Rather than applying a one-size-fits-all luxury aesthetic across its properties, each hotel under the Hotel Indigo brand is designed as a reflection of the culture, character, and community of the neighbourhood.
Under IHGโs Luxury & Lifestyle collection of brands, every Hotel Indigo property across the world follows this principleโbecoming a kind of cultural lens through which travellers can experience the heartbeat of the neighbourhood.

Don’t miss out on going up to the rooftop infinity pool, which has vantage views of Katongโs eclectic rooftops.
Moreover, IHGโs standard of service shone through in the staffโs warmth and attentiveness.
They were both efficient and thoughtful, making me feel like a welcomed guest, not just a visitor.
Sights and Sounds of Katong
Step outside, and the streets of Katong-Joo Chiat unfold like pages from a living storybook. Thereโs a timeless charm here: kopitiams filled with locals sipping kopi and nibbling kaya toast, and century-old shophouses that stand proudly beside modern staples like City Plaza and Tanjong Katong Complex. History is everywhere, if youโre lookingโlike at the Katong Post Office, a colonial relic from 1933 thatโs quietly stood witness to decades of change.
Just across the road, the aroma of freshly baked bread wafts from Micro Bakery & Kitchen, occupying the shop space that was formerly the beloved Katong Bakery & Confectionery. Itโs a hotspot these days, with its artisanal loaves and hand-pulled coffees. As tempting as it was to join the queue, I chose instead to keep wandering, knowing that Katong always has more stories to offer, just around the corner.

‘Peranakan Escapeโ Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong room package
I was fortunate to have reservations for a museum tour of the Peranakan Mansion, just steps away from the iconic, pastel-hued shophouses of Koon Seng Road. As part of the hotelโs SG60 celebration, they have launched โPeranakan Escapeโ room package, where guests receive complimentary tickets for a guided tour of this charming heritage museum (housed on the second storey across three shophouses).
The term Peranakan, meaning “locally born” in Malay, refers to descendants of Chinese traders and local Malay women. As a result, the culture blends Chinese, Malay, and European influences into something uniquely Southeast Asian.

Peranakan Mansion by Straits Enclave, located along Joo Chiat Road, is a must-visit living museum. Unlike typical exhibitions, this space invites you to touch, feel, and truly experience Peranakan heritage. Inside, youโll discover beautifully preserved traditional clothing, intricately ornate furnishings, and captivating stories handed down through generations.

The museum tour is paired with a Peranakan kueh and tea experience plus complimentary Nyonya kebaya rental, with options for indoor and outdoor photo-taking.
The room stay package also includes
- Daily breakfast at Baba Chews
- Complimentary carpark coupon

Valid for bookings made from now to 31 December 2025, for stays during the same period.
Mom really enjoyed the opportunity to play dress up and capture the colourful shophouses in her photo!

Charlie Chaplin Slept Here: Throwback to Katongโs storied past
Katong-Joo Chiat is Singaporeโs first Heritage Town, a title that speaks volumes about its cultural significance. Long before Katong became a trendy enclave, it was a seaside escape for the eliteโand even Hollywood royalty. In the 1930s, Charlie Chaplin and his brother Sydney stayed in the area during a tour of Asia. Rumour has it, they were captivated by the charm of the Straits-style villas and the laid-back rhythm of Peranakan life. They stayed at the Sea View Hotel in Tanjong Katong, which was renowed as one of Singapore’s top 3 hotels in the 1930s, alongside the Raffles Hotel and Adelphi Hotel.
Charlie Chaplin’s visit may have been fleeting, but it left an indelible markโadding a dash of old-school glamour to Katongโs already rich tapestry of stories. Today, strolling through the colourful shophouses and sipping kopi in a local cafรฉ, you can almost picture the silent film icon tipping his bowler hat to curious locals.
Exploring modern-day Katong
With the vibrant streets and rich heritage right outside the hotel’s doorstep, it was the perfect setting to make new memories. From finding Peranakan souvenirs to bustling cafes and local coffeeshops.

The neighbourhood is design-forward without being showy, soulful without trying too hard. As you walk around, admire vibrant street murals alongside retro shopfronts. Thereโs a quiet confidence to the neighbourhoodโa charm that feels both curated and lived-in.

Breakfast at Baba Chews
Breakfast at Baba Chews is a semi-buffet that strikes a balance between self-service options and thoughtful indulgence. Breakfast mains are ordered ร la carte – you could order your eggs in different styles including options of an Egg Benedict, Egg Royale or an Egg Florentine, in addition to pancakes, waffles and cinnamon french toast.

There is an old-school juicer is available guests to press their own fresh orange juice. Prefer not to squeeze? Ready-to-drink juices are also available as an alternative.

On weekends, keep an eye out for specials. I was served a comforting bowl of Singapore laksa, complete with quail egg, fishcake, tau pok, and prawns in a lightly savoury broth. Other Saturday specials also include olive fried rice and mini egg tarts.

A Memorable Blend of Culture and Comfort
Staying at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong feels like stepping into a living Peranakan museum. The hotelโs design is a celebration of local heritage, thoughtfully curated with bursts of colour, traditional patterns, and artisanal details that honour the Peranakan culture.
Itโs a place where curiosity leads, and authenticity reigns with design elements telling a story as vivid and rich as the neighbourhood outside its doors. And the convenience of being just a short 5-min walk from the Marine Parade MRT station is a bonus!
Celebrating SG60 with a Taste of Katong
