James Walkden, General Manager of The Westin Singapore

Can you recall a particularly memorable encounter or experience during your travels that left a lasting impression on you, either personally or professionally?

I have had the privilege of exploring various parts of the world, both as a budget traveler when I was younger, and more recently, traveling for work and family adventures. One moment etched indelibly in my memory was when I was a 25-year-old backpacker. After attending a local wedding that I had been invited to join, I found myself sitting on a beach in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific late one night. Engaging in conversation with a young local in his 20s, he shared his dream to visit the UK, a destination he aspired to experience.

I told him that I understood that desire but he must also never forget that his home is one full of so much natural beauty and positivity from its people, that is hard to find in many more developed countries. That night, I came to realize the profound influence of my passport, and since then, I have never taken it for granted.

If you had to choose one word that best describes you as a leader, what would it be, and why?

Caring.  I have an inherent belief that paying it forward causes a ripple effect. I do everything I can to ensure my team and in turn, our guests and clients are well cared for.  Caring is the foundation of the hospitality industry and it embodies every decision I make. While there can be different circumstances, my underlying intention remains consistent: to express genuine care.

Can you share a defining moment in your life or career that has had a profound impact on your approach to leadership?

I have been fortunate to have some amazing career experiences with assignments that have taken me from the UK to Australia. As a family, my wife and daughter have lived with me in Hong Kong, Mainland China, and now Singapore.  Each of these experiences has enriched me as a person and professionally. I believe my collective experience living abroad and understanding of different cultures has helped me become a better leader. I have a much deeper understanding of the world and all its nuances.

Can you share a personal mantra or guiding philosophy that you live by?

Treat others as you would expect to be treated.  Whether it is with family and friends, colleagues and guests, I think this is an important mindset to live by.

What habits or routines do you prioritize in your daily life to maintain a healthy work-life balance and ensure personal well-being amidst your professional responsibilities?

I try to focus on balance, primarily trying to eat and drink healthy options. However, I am not afraid to have a little indulgence from time to time as I am a believer that we all need balance.  I also like to work out in our Westin Workout Fitness studio at least three times a week, and the exercise routine has positively improved both my physical and mental health.
