A 5-min walk from Double Six Beach in Bali’s vibrant Seminyak district, Grand Mercure Bali Seminyak has an enviable location with easy access to eclectic boutiques, quirky cafés, contemporary galleries, hip bars, and stylish restaurants.
Moreover, this contemporary family-friendly hotel with 269 rooms and suites stands out because of its Balinese designs and curated experiences introducing guests to Bali’s tapestry of traditions and art forms.
Gallery of Artworks & Balinese Symbolism
As soon as you step into Grand Mercure Bali Seminyak, you are immediately embraced by the rich cultural essence of Bali. The lobby, adorned with exquisite Balinese art and traditional wood carvings, sets the tone for a stay that beautifully blends contemporary luxury with local heritage. There is also a musician playing soothing Balinese melodies on the “Rindik”, a traditional Balinese musical instrument, similar to the modern-day xylophone, made with bamboos of varying lengths and sizes.
Walking through the hotel, I was able to admire the artworks by local Indonesian artists, including an “Ungkara” piece behind the reception desks and additional installations in the all-day dining Batur restaurant.
I found out later that the artworks are called “penjor” – a traditional Balinese ornament typically displayed during the Galungan and Kuningan religious festivities, The act of installing a penjor is typically practiced by Hindu devotees in Bali to signify their gratitude to their gods for the prosperity and blessings showered upon them.
In the guest rooms, there is a ceiling fan above the bed and replicas of the crowns worn by Balinese dancers adorn the bed head, honouring the island’s rich tradition of dance. I loved how the bathroom was so cleverly designed with a window to ensure privacy if needed, but also reflective of the Balinese influences incorporated to showcase a contemporary classic style.
The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities you would expect from a luxury hotel, including air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Plus there was a plate of local fruits and complimentary dessert when I arrived back in the room after dinner. What a nice surprise!
Lush tropical pool gardens and Rejuvenating Spa
One of the highlights of my stay was the trio of inviting swimming pools, exuding a tropical vibe. There is a Lagoon Pool Bar serving up craft cocktails and beers and it was a great option to chill out. Guests can also order some snacks from the pool bar if you want to spend the day just chilling by the pool. Naima Spa, the hotel’s in-house spa offers an array of Balinese massages, and promises blissful relaxation and rejuvenation in candlelit treatment rooms.
In addition to the outdoor playground, there is a children’s pool and an indoor Kids club. For those that want to stay active, there is a fitness centre next to the spa, and there are yoga sessions for hotel guests.
Flavours of Bali at Batur Restaurant
Batur restaurant brings the unique flavours of Bali to life with traditional cooking methods and local ingredients, as well as a selection of Bali-made wines, spirits, and beers. There is a sumptious spread for the breakfast buffet which start early at 7am (and ends at 10.30am). Catering to an international palette, there is a wide variety of eggs (live cooking station) and Western breakfast choices like bacon, sausages alongside Indonesian food, and there is even an Indian section and some Chinese dim sum. I appreciated the live cooking stations for noodles soup, and pancakes (and waffles). Sweet-toothed guests will love the wide variety of donuts, pastries and cakes!
Sun-kissed Beach for Surfing and Sunbathing
Double Six Beach, also known as Mesari Beach, is one of Bali’s most iconic stretches of coastline, offering a vibrant and picturesque escape for travelers seeking both relaxation and adventure. In the morning, one will find surfers trying to catch the morning waves, joined by newbies gearing up for their first surfing lessons.
As the day unfolds, the beach transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colorful umbrellas, loungers, and enthusiastic wave riders. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or simply revel in the rhythmic crash of waves, Double Six Beach is a favourite spot for locals and tourists alike. One of the most captivating features of Double Six Beach is its breathtaking sunsets. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of brilliant oranges, pinks, and purples, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that attracts photographers and romantics from all over the world.
