Christian Metzner, General Manager, W Singapore – Sentosa Cove

Can you recall a particularly memorable encounter or experience during your travels that left a lasting impression on you?

I have been fortunate enough to have worked and traveled around Asia for the past 20 years. Throughout these two decades, it has been a whirlwind of unforgettable experiences and meaningful connections. From forging deep friendships that transcend cultural boundaries to encountering awe-inspiring mentors and colleagues, every encounter has left an indelible mark on my life. Additionally, I have gained profound insights, invaluable lessons, and long-lasting connections. I am grateful for every moment, both personally and professionally, and I cherish the transformative power of these encounters that have shaped my journey.

How would you describe yourself as a leader?

“Understanding” and “Flexibility” are both integral descriptors of who I am as a leader. I believe that my commitment lies in championing teamwork and leveraging our differences to achieve shared success. Understanding the diverse motivations, aspirations, and varying approaches of my team members is pivotal in fostering a collaborative environment where everyone can thrive. Flexibility is equally crucial, as it acknowledges that different paths and reasons can lead to the same destination. Embracing this flexibility enriches my leadership journey, resulting in enhanced outcomes and personal growth.

Can you share a defining moment in your life or career that had a profound impact on your approach to leadership?

I would begin by acknowledging the profound influence my parents have had on my values since childhood, for which I am deeply grateful.

Professionally, I must highlight the impact of my first supervisor, the Director of Sales & Marketing at the start of my career in Germany. He was very detailed and straightforward, leaving an indelible mark as a mentor. These lessons propelled me as I ventured from Germany to explore opportunities in China, Malaysia, and eventually Singapore where I am today.

Furthermore, his teachings continue to resonate with me, serving as a compass for me as I navigate the complexities of my career. Throughout my journey, I’ve collaborated with various senior leaders. I retain their collective guidance and insights, significantly shaping my current career path. These experiences have provided invaluable lessons that continue to influence my decisions and aspirations.

Do you have a personal mantra that you live by?

There is a saying in German, ‘Wie man in den Wald hineinruft, so schallt es heraus,’ which literally means ‘shout into the forest and a similar echo will return,’ or ‘what comes around goes around.’ I am a firm believer in the importance of treating others the way you would like them to treat you. While seemingly simple, its significance is profound. I believe that cultivating kindness and empathy not only enriches our interactions but also fosters a harmonious and interconnected world.

What habits or routines do you prioritize in your daily life to maintain a healthy work-life balance and ensure personal well-being amidst your professional responsibilities?

I believe that routine fosters habits and can enhance one’s efficiency and productivity. Whenever possible, I make it a priority to enjoy my daily cup of coffee in a tranquil setting in the morning. Despite busy schedules, prioritizing my workouts is non-negotiable—an essential commitment to both physical and mental well-being. Additionally, meeting with friends to exchange ideas, thoughts, and catch up is definitely what helps me the most. It’s a cornerstone of my work-life balance, fostering creativity and providing crucial support. These connections play a vital role in helping me maintain a healthy equilibrium between work and personal life.
