If you’re looking for a hotel in Batam that combines modern luxury with an unbeatable location, look no further than Oakwood Hotel & Apartments Grand Batam. On my recent trip, I opted for a change from the usual resort experience. Instead, I stayed at Oakwood Grand Batam because of its central location and direct access to the city’s largest shopping destination, Grand Batam Mall.
This decision proved to be delightful, primarily because of its hyper-proximity to shopping, dining, and Batam’s famous Penuin Market, known for its wholesale shops selling dry goods.
Arrival & Check-in experience
When we stepped into the hotel, we were greeted by friendly staff who made the check-in process smooth and welcoming. The contemporary design of the lobby with high ceilings added an impressive sense of space, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. Stylish furnishings and subtle decor elements enhanced the overall ambiance, making it clear that Oakwood Hotel & Apartments Grand Batam prioritizes both comfort and sophistication.
Having a tough time deciding if you should choose a hotel room or an apartment? My recommendation is to stay at Oakwood Grand Batam, which offers the best of both worlds.Their apartments all have a living room area, which is great for lounging in, with a kitchenette, washing machine and large fridge – ensuring you have a wonderful home-away-from-home experience!
Scented Candle-making with Aura Sanctum
The highlight of our stay was undoubtedly the afternoon spent with the ladies from Aura Sanctum, who have partnered with Oakwood Grand Batam to offer hands-on workshops for hotel guests. My mother and I immersed ourselves in the art of scented candle making at the hotelโs Oak Bistro, situated on the 8th floor.
We were first introduced to the various custom blend fragrances from Aura Sanctum. After selecting our favourites, we added them to soy wax and carefully poured the mixture into beautifully designed containers. This engaging experience created a memorable bonding moment for my mom and me. If you’re looking for unique activities in Batam, this workshop is an absolute must-try!
My mom displayed her creative flair by selecting preserved dried flowers to beautifully complement the fragrances. The laughter we shared while choosing the perfect blend added to the joy of the afternoon. Watching our candles take shape was incredibly satisfying, and the delightful aromas that filled the room created a warm, inviting atmosphere.
This workshop wasn’t just about making candles; it was a cherished bonding experience combined with the satisfaction of crafting something beautiful together. The candles we created served as lovely reminders of our fun-filled afternoon, capturing the essence of our shared moments.
Buffet Breakfast at Oak Bistro
Whatโs not to love about a buffet breakfast that offers an abundance of choice? At Oakwood Grand Batam, the breakfast spread was nothing short of spectacular. From traditional favorites to international delights, there is something to satisfy every palate.
I greatly appreciate the thoughtful attention to detail, especially in the selection of keropok (crispy crackers). The variety provided a delightful crunch, offering a taste of local flavors right from the start of the day.
Over breakfast, the stunning view of the Banyan infinity pool provided the perfect backdrop, creating a serene atmosphere that elevated the entire experience.
Whether youโre in the mood for a hearty breakfast or a light snack, the buffet breakfast at Oakwood Grand Batam is a fantastic way to kick off your day in style!
Spa Treatment Indulgence at Aespa
It was a clever move by Oakwood Grand Batam to partner with Aespa Spa, which is just beside the hotel. After a hectic afternoon exploring the neighborhood, stepping into the tranquil spa was a welcome reprieve. The concierge team helped me to book an appointment with the spa which is located just beside the hotel, ensuring I could indulge in a luxurious spa experience without any hassle.
I highly recommend Aespa for anyone looking to enhance their stay with indulgent self-care.
Exploring the neighbourhood
Just steps from the hotel’s main entrance lies Grand Batam Mall, a bustling hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment.
If it is raining, connectivity via the hotel and shopping mall is through the shared carpark, providing sheltered access. At the mall, there is a variety of shops including well-known fashion brands like H&M and Uniqlo, alongside Indonesia concept brands like Colorbox and This Is April for unique fashion finds. Additionally, beauty enthusiasts can visit Sociolla, Make Over and C&F for cosmetic and skincare products and anyone getting your grocery fix, TOP 100 Supermarket is massive and even has its adjoining food court!
Around the neighbourhood, there is a vibrant array of cafรฉs, restaurants, and local eateries, as well as beauty and wellness shops offering a range of services. Unwind in style during your travels by indulging in rejuvenating massages, lavish spa and hair treatments, and affordable manicures and pedicures. Whether you’re looking to savor a delicious meal or unwind with some self-care, everything you need is right at your doorstep.
One of my favorite finds was Fore Coffee, a trendy cafรฉ known for its artisanal brews and cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend the Iced Matcha Green Tea which was refreshing for a mid-afternoon tea break. Plus the store concept was stylish and spacious, which was a great venue for people watching.
Furthermore, we were thrilled to discover that Penuin Market, renowned for its lively atmosphere and authentic local flavors was located just across the street. This bustling market was a feast for the senses, with vibrant stalls brimming with fresh produce, spices, and handcrafted goods. I spent our mornings after breakfast wandering through the market, sampling local snacks, and chatting with friendly vendors.
The outdoor A2 Food Court is also just a short 5 min walk away from Oakwood Grand Batam. Here, I indulged in authentic Indonesian dishes, enhancing my appreciation for the cityโs vibrant food scene.
My top foodie find on this trip is Tua Poh Ki, a charming family-run shop just beside Penuin market that I later found out is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Renowned for its authentic Teochew-style kueh, my favourite was their Soon Kueh – every bite reveals a delightful combination of ingredients. It was so flavourful that we decided to order some to bring back home to Singapore!
Another must-try is their Peng Kueh, which has an exceptionally soft textureโmuch more delicate than those typically found in Singapore.
The Oyster Omelette is another highlight, boasting a perfect balance of crispy edges and tender juicy oysters. It’s the ideal comfort food, packed with umami goodness. If you’re a fan of noodles, don’t miss the fishball noodles where they have a variety of home-made fishballs and yong tau fu ingredients.
Confessiona of a Batam Convert
Batam has unveiled itself as a vibrant tapestry of culinary delights and indulgence, just one hour away from Singapore. I love how easy it is to hop onto a ferry for a rejuvenating escape without the fuss of long-haul travel.
This family-friendly destination offers something for everyoneโwhether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both. Parents will especially appreciate the convenience of Batamโs proximity to Singapore, making it perfect for spontaneous getaways with minimal planning.
I’m already plotting my return visit to indulge in tranquil spa days that dissolve lifeโs daily stresses. With so much still left to explore, I can hardly wait to return and discover even more of what this captivating island has to offer!
