Nestled in the heart of Kyoto’s historic district, where time-honored traditions meet contemporary allure, The Celestine Kyoto Gion emerges as a sanctuary of tranquility. This refined hotel offers a serene refuge for those yearning to escape the rigours of modern life. Perhaps influenced by its strategic location opposite Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple, the hotel exudes an aura of calm amidst the bustling beauty of Kyoto.
Kenninji Temple, founded in 1202, holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Zen in Japan. Its serene grounds, peppered with shrines and sub-temples, is also a shortcut for guests venturing towards the vibrant Shijo-dori shopping street. Accessible directly from the hotel’s entrance, Kenninji Temple shields the hotel from the lively Hanamikoji street, Japan’s best known Geisha street that is lined with well-preserved machiya (traditional wooden townhouses) and ochaya (tea houses).
MACHIYA: ARCHITECTURAL ELEGANCE
A Machiya functioned as both a residence and place of business. These intriguing dwellings have graced the streets of Kyoto for over 1200 years, embodying a unique architectural heritage. Found predominantly in the historic district of Gion, Machiya are traditional wooden townhouses characterized by their narrow facades and elongated structures.
The distinctive design of Machiya can be attributed to a historical quirk: property taxes were once levied based on the width of a home’s street-facing frontage. As a result, these houses were built long and narrow, with two stories to maximize living space within the constraints of taxation.
Walking through the streets of Gion, one can’t help but be captivated by the timeless elegance of Machiya. Each structure tells a story of centuries past, reflecting the ingenuity of craftsmen and the cultural significance of Kyoto’s architectural landscape.
OCHAYA: TRADITIONAL TEAHOUSES FOR ENTERTAINMENT
In the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha,” Ochaya plays a central role in depicting the intricacies of the geisha world within Kyoto’s Gion district. These traditional teahouses serve as the exclusive venues where geisha entertain and cultivate relationships with their patrons. These elegant sanctuaries in Kyoto are typically adorned with exquisite decor and imbued with an aura of refinement. In modern times, Ochaya offer a window into the refined culture of Kyoto’s geisha community.
THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES
The hotel’s meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout its design. Upon entering the rooms, guests are greeted by a tastefully arranged teapot set, setting the tone for a meditative stay. Spacious accommodations feature separate wet and dry areas in the bathrooms, ensuring a seamless blend of functionality and comfort.
Tea culture permeates the hotel’s ambiance, with two guest rooms aptly named “Tea Room” offering an exclusive matcha experience by Ippodo, Kyoto’s premier tea purveyor.
The Celestine boasts a guest lounge reminiscent of an art gallery, transitioning from an afternoon tea venue to a sophisticated bar by night. Guests can indulge in complimentary refreshments and Japanese delicacies while perusing a curated collection of Kyoto literature.
During my stay with my mother in July, coinciding with the Gion Matsuri Festival, I appreciated the thoughtful inclusion of festival information in the lobby. The hotel’s proximity to Yasaka Shrine facilitated easy access to festival events, enhancing our cultural immersion.
SPA RETREAT
Mom and I discovered our haven within the hotel’s public bath, and we especially liked how the spa was open from 3pm to 10am the next day. The spacious large bath offers views of the inner garden which offers one the opportunity to immerse in the relaxed atmosphere of Kyoto. The thoughtful touches of a spacious dressing room was much appreciated.
CULINARY EXCELLENCE AT YASAKA ENDO
Our dining experiences at Yasaka Endo, renowned for its traditional Tempura and historic significance as a former Geisha teahouse, were a highlight of our stay. Breakfast showcased the finest Tempura in Kyoto, prepared using traditional copper fryers. Lunch offered a choice between two meticulously crafted set menus, each dish a testament to the restaurant’s century-old legacy and culinary finesse.
The Celestine Kyoto Gion offers an unparalleled retreat amidst Kyoto’s rich cultural tapestry. With its meticulous attention to detail, culinary excellence, and serene spa facilities, the hotel surpasses expectations, delivering an unforgettable experience for discerning travelers.
