Perched atop the majestic cliffs of Nusa Dua, The Apurva Kempinski Bali offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean and lush tropical gardens. This five-star resort epitomizes beachfront luxury and serves as a beacon of sustainable hospitality.
Stewarding Sustainable Hospitality
As the first hotel in Indonesia to achieve Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Certification, The Apurva Kempinski Bali is committed to sustainable growth, encompassing all aspects of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance).
In June 2024, The Apurva Kempinski Bali hosted a landmark event, bringing together experts and community leaders to promote sustainable practices and carbon neutrality. This event underscores the resort’s dedication to environmental stewardship and its pioneering role in sustainable initiatives within the hospitality industry.
Fashion & Jewelery Designers on Sustainability
Promoting sustainability in fashion and jewelry, Bali-based fashion designer Dwi Iskandar and Sri Utami from John Hardy, a certified brand by the Responsible Jewellery Council shared insights on their sustainable practices. The event also featured an eco-green fashion show by Dwi Iskandar, showcasing 24 masterpieces crafted from recycled fabrics.
Sustainability in the Kitchen
On the culinary front, Ade Putri Paramadita, Apurva Culinary Ambassador, Executive Sous Chef Iswati Endah, and TempeMan founder Benny Santoso introduced indigenous Indonesian ingredients and discussed their kitchen sustainability initiatives.
Mangrove Seed Planting
Under the theme of ‘Decarbonisation,’ the event supported Bali’s regenerative program by donating all proceeds from ticket sales and offsetting the event’s carbon footprint through mangrove seed planting.
The Apurva Kempinski Bali is committed to planting a minimum of 1,000 mangrove seeds. This initiative will include guest participation through the Reef Beach Club and Koral Restaurant, further fostering a connection between visitors and the resort’s sustainability efforts.
“Together, we aim to lead by example and inspire a greener, more responsible tourism industry. We hope that through this event, we may inspire others to pursue sustainable growth and to advance more sustainable tourism.”

Kempinski Sustainability
Sustainability is deeply integrated into the hotel’s operations, encompassing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) impacts. This holistic approach involves all stakeholders, including colleagues, guests, owners, and communities.
Environmental
By taking a science-based approach, the resort focuses on enhancing energy efficiency, reducing waste, and incorporating renewable energy sources. These efforts aim to minimize the resort’s carbon footprint and contribute to ecological conservation. Key initiatives target critical areas such as carbon emissions from energy use, waste management, and water conservation, thereby reducing environmental impacts and mitigating risks to business operations.
Some key initiatives include:
EV (Electric Vehicle Experience)
Those who stay at the resort can now use Nissan’s electric vehicle, Nissan LEAF, and contribute to reducing carbon emissions as they explore the Nusa Dua area and adjacent attractions. To ensure a seamless experience, the resort also has its own EV charging station, making it the only resort in Bali to have this essential site.
Sustainable Agriculture
Using the rooftop space to grow various types of greens, this Rooftop Garden is set to establish a more sustainable kitchen in the resort. Plants are grown in a hydroponic and soil cultivation system. These plants are then harvested, and used as cooking ingredients.
Green Linen Artefact
This artefact is in the form of Jalak Bali (also known as the Bali starling), the island’s indigenous bird. Guests can place the Jalak Bali artifact on their bedside table to indicate that they would like to save water by having their linen replaced the following day.
Achieve Zero Waste
o Replacing single-use plastic with biodegradable products
In addition to replacing the commonly used items such as straws to biodegradable products, we are partnering with Tanamera to provide compost certified coffee capsules throughout the resort.
o Linen for Life and Soap for Life in partnership with Diversey
In collaboration with Diversey, the ‘Linens for Life’ programme provides free face masks made from clean and hygienic discarded hotel linen to people in the local community who are in need. Meanwhile, the Soap for Hope programme provides at-risk people with access to soap, and information about how and when to use it. Soaps from the resort are cut and disinfected and pressed together to form new soap bars.
Rooftop Hydroponic Garden
Using the rooftop space to grow various types of greens, this Rooftop Garden is set to establish a more sustainable kitchen in the resort. Plants are grown in a hydroponic and soil cultivation system. These plants are then harvested, and used as cooking ingredients.
Mangrove Planting
Mangrove Planting Programme offers several key benefits, including coastal protection, biodiversity enhancement, carbon sequestration, and improved water quality. To underscore its commitment to climate neutrality, The Apurva Kempinski Bali has partnered with Eco-Tourism Bali to launch this program, starting with planting 1,000 seeds. To continue making a more significant impact, guests are encouraged to participate in this initiative, which is available when dining at the Koral Restaurant and Reef Beach Club.
